The Esopus Scenic Train

The Esopus Scenic Train

We are still recovering from the effects of 2011’s Hurricane Irene, where the railroad suffered major damage at both Phoenicia and Cold Brook which prevent us from operating the entire length of our excursion. As we rebuild, we offer a shorter five mile round trip that departs from our Mt. Tremper station on Route 28. On behalf of our volunteers, thank you for your continued support!

The Catskill Mountain Railroad Scenic Train is a 5 mile round trip between Mt. Tremper and Boiceville — a wonderful 45-minute minute railroad excursion. After arriving at the Mount Tremper depot, purchase your ticket from the ticket agent. After departing Mount Tremper, your ride will be along the Esopus Creek, famed for its scenic beauty and great fishing. You may even spot bald eagles, great blue herons, hawks, deer and other wildlife along its banks. Framing the beautiful Esopus Valley on either side of the creek are namesake Mount Tremper to the north and Mount Pleasant and Romer Mountain to the south.

While our trains are not currently serving Phoenicia, no trip is complete without a visit to the Empire State Railway Museum located inside the restored station building! Step into the past by visiting the historic 1900 railroad depot. Here you can explore railroading both past and present along the old Ulster & Delaware route.

The Kingston City Shuttle

The Kingston City Shuttle

The last passenger train departed Kingston for Oneonta in 1954. In 2008, our volunteers rebuilt and reopened the first sections of track in downtown Kingston and introduced our Kingston City Shuttle. With the goal of crossing the Esopus River and climbing Mount Hurley to reach the Ashokan reservoir, volunteers rebuilt almost two miles of track through the historic city of Kingston. Our special Saturday-only service runs from July through October, with special winter holiday service through December. Your 45-minute round trip traces the same route travelers have used since the 1860's to access the Catskills by rail. The short train ride through Kingston is just one part of a long-term plan to re-open the length of the railroad to Ashokan and Phoenicia.

All trains depart from Westbrook Lane in Kingston.
